Ten Reported Dead in Vietnam Floods

(MENAFN) Torrential downpours and flooding have killed at least 10 people and left five others missing across central Vietnam, media reported on Wednesday.

Since October 23, relentless rain triggered by a cold front and tropical convergence zone has inundated the region, dumping more than 1,000 millimeters (about 40 inches) of rainfall in some areas.

Authorities said more than 7,000 households — roughly 21,000 people — have been forced to evacuate, while hydropower plants are working to release water gradually to ease flooding downstream.

In Da Nang, six residents were confirmed dead, 19 injured, and four remain unaccounted for. Floodwaters engulfed 29 communes along the lower Vu Gia–Thu Bon River basin, and landslides isolated another 10 mountainous communes.

In the nearby province of Thua Thien Hue, one person drowned and a 5-year-old girl was reported missing in the floodwaters. Officials said 32 of the city’s 40 communes are still submerged.

Further south in Quang Ngai, local authorities reported three fatalities and more than 120 landslides that have blocked key highways and stranded multiple vehicles.

Military units and rescue teams have been dispatched to assist with evacuations and relief operations, but persistent heavy rain has hampered efforts.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that more intense rainfall is expected to continue through Thursday night.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday to coordinate national flood response and recovery efforts.
